DESCRIPTION:
APW - Seth Thomas, "Special Motor Service" marked mvt and dial, 17J, Model 5, 18S, gold-filled OF recase, white enamel DS impressed dial, SW-LS, two-tone gilt and nickel damascene, s#222866. An interesting and rare movement marking, per the information at Eric Unselt's www.seththomasresearch.com website it is believed that in total approximately 200 examples of the "Special Motor Service" were produced.
CONDITION:
Mvt: Ticking sluggishly on a full wind, overhaul recommended, nearly mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, superb two-tone color, some fine scratches adjacent lower case screw, few micro-fine scratches elsewhere; dial with patched edge chip under bezel at 9, hl under bezel between 9 and 10, small edge flake under bezel near 8, few fine scratches within seconds-register; case shows medium wear, small deep ding to band near 10, reduced engraving detail, slivers of wear to brass to band, some wear to brass to pendant; tight brassy bow is somewhat out of shape, crown shows ample wear; good glass crystal.
